From Clay to Community: Discovering Everyday Histories for Families and Children

Step into the everyday lives of the people who made Dudson, from the opening of the factory on Hope Street in 1800 to the thriving community hub we see today.

Exclusively for Heritage Open Days 2026, this exhibition explores over two centuries of working life in the Dudson centre, from factory to community hub, placing the stories of Dudson’s workers alongside the wider world around them. While revolutions unfolded, railways spread across countries, and even humans set foot on the moon, everyday life at Dudson continued. The everyday histories of everyday people shaped by clay, skill, and the potters art.

For one day only, the Dudson Centre will open on Saturday 19th September 2026 for a day of discovery. Take a journey back in time and discover how the people of the past lived and worked; their ‘Everyday Histories’.

See how pots were made and try some pottery painting, have ‘Tea with Arnold Bennett,’ and discover what life was like for those working and living on Hope Street. Watch videos of the past, explore the exhibition, relax in the Dudson Café with a drink and a snack, and have FUN!

In partnership with the Arnold Bennett Society we’ll also be treated to a performance of ‘Tea with Arnold Bennett’.

A relaxed chat with Arnold over a cup of tea is an insight into his relationship with the Potteries – all told in his own words from essays, letters, diary entries, short stories and novels. Bennett was a great wordsmith, and engages the ear with astute observations and wonderful writing. Born in Hope Street, he grew up in Hanley, and his final summing up of the unique character of the Potteries those who live here is amusing, moving, and masterful.
